Metro Police Department (MPD) has always shared some missing persons on
social media, but early this year the new police commander decided to use
Twitter for every critical case.
|
2.
Major landmarks around the world have been turning out their lights to mark
Earth Hour, an event that draws attention to climate change.
|
|
3. Fast-forward to today and oil is now so abundant and
cheaply available that most of us use it liberally in our cooking
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1.
Since then, the faces behind the nearly 200 people - many of them children,
many of them female - who go missing each month have loomed large on social
media. Many see the missing person tweets but often miss the follow-up tweets
once someone has been found, says Gertz. The result is a sense that girls in
DC are going missing at an alarming rate - and that no one is paying
attention.
|
2. Around
170 countries and territories were expected to take part on Saturday, by
turning off non-essential lights at 20:30 local time. The event, which
reaches its 10th anniversary this year, is organised by conservation group
WWF. "We started Earth Hour in 2007 to show leaders that climate change
was an issue people cared about," said coordinator Siddarth Das. "For
that symbolic moment to turn into the global movement it is today, is really
humbling and speaks volumes about the powerful role of people in issues that
affect their lives."

When he was growing up in the 1960s, vegetable oil was still a precious
commodity and used sparingly. Over 50% of the world's population is not of a
"healthy weight", according to Prof Benton's recent report on food production. And worldwide obesity has
more than doubled since 1980. Dr Costa-Font says the research suggests that
once people adapt their diet and lifestyle to these changes - basically move
more and eat less - more normal weights will again prevail.

their laptops and tablets on board.
|
|
3. TripAdvisor, the travel
planning and booking website, has named Bali as the global winner of its 2017
Travelers' Choice Awards for destinations.
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1.The
story is about the crew’s struggle to keep the organism - dubbed Calvin -
from growing larger and consuming them all. The tunnels of the ISS are
claustrophobic and one can only move so quickly in zero gravity, so together
these make for some exciting chase scenes. Being in space raises the stakes
and Life takes advantage of that.Still, the characters in Life are
clichés. Reynolds is the sarcastic one and Gyllenhaal the lonely one.
Nonetheless, this group has enough talent and chemistry to make them come to
life. As the alien picks them off one-by-one, it’s hard not to feel a tinge
of sadness, even if it doesn’t linger.
|
2. The U.S. and Britain, citing concerns about terrorist
attacks, are not allowing passengers on some flights from mostly Middle
Eastern and North African countries to bring laptops, tablets and certain
other devices on board with them in their carry-on bags. All electronics
bigger than a smartphone must be checked in.
|
|
3.
Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the
quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and
attractions across destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

1.Muslim-friendly spots for holidaymakers on Nami
Island.
2. US and UK laptop bans on some Middle East flights

3. How Schools Are Going Solar.

|
Newsworthy event (Main event)
|
1.
In light of the rising number of Muslim tourists visiting the island, Nami
Island now provides several halal places to ensure they have a more
convenient visit.
|
2.
A ban on laptops and tablets in cabin baggage on flights from Turkey and some
countries in the Middle East and North Africa to the US and UK has come into
effect.
|
|
3.
The cost for individual homes in the U.S. to "go solar" has dropped
by more than 60 percent over the last decade.
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. Recently Nami Island increased
the size of its mushola (prayer room), thus the prayer room
is now able to accommodate up to 130 people in its
144-square-meter space. Equipped with a qibla compass and wudhu
(ablution) facilities, the mushola can
be found in the central area of the island, on the second floor of the Baplex
building. Asian Family Restaurant Dongmoon
became known as one of the places to visit for Muslim travelers after it
gained its halal certification in 2014.
|
2. The US Department for Homeland
Security has cited attacks on planes and airports over the past two years as
the reason for the ban Aviation experts say the ban could hit airline profits
as risks include a fall in passenger numbers, decreasing customer
satisfaction and higher costs linked to screening baggage.
|
|
3. Those low costs helped convince
more than a million Americans to install solar panels on their roofs. Now
schools are beginning to get in on the benefits. One of them is the school
system in Fremont, Indiana. The residents of this small town in America's
upper Midwest have always relied on the sun to warm their fields and draw
tourists to their lakes. Now school superintendent William Stitt said they’re
counting on it to power their schools. "The technology has advanced so
much in the last couple of years that it’s become more energy efficient, more
cost effective for schools to get solar energy," Stitt said.
